Good Morning Britain hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard welcomed Kwasi Kwarteng onto the show to discuss the climate change strikes across the globe and what the government is doing to
help. The pair were shocked when meteorologist Laura Tobin jumped in to grill the Tory MP. Ben said: “Our meteorologist who’s in the studio, Laura, knows about this sort of thing. “When you
were saying, it’s not an emergency, she was disclaiming that. She’s saying it absolutely is an emergency.” Kwasi hit back: “I think it’s a serious crisis, we can argue about the words, I
think it’s a serious crisis…” “It is an emergency and yes, it is great that we have committed to be carbon neutral by the year 2050 but there are no policies in place and there are only two
countries in the world, Morocco and the Gambia that are actually set to meet their targets out of the whole world. “We need to be doing better.” “Absolutely, that’s one of the reasons why
I’m excited about my new job. I think that we have a big challenge, i think we have made some success as I have tried to demonstrate,” Kwasi replied. “But also we could be doing much more, I
think coal…” Kate chipped in: “What more would you like to do Kwasi that you’re not allowed to do currently?” “I think, obviously we’ve got get through Brexit and all of the rest of it,”
Kwasi explained. “We’ve got an energy white paper that should be published shortly. “I think we’ve got an interesting debate about renewables and off shore wind. As I’ve said, the prices
have been coming down much faster than we anticipated but like I said, we could be doing more. “I’m very excited about electric vehicles, I think the plan to essentially completely
decarbonise cars by 2040 is an exciting one. “People are saying we should accelerate that and maybe get that done by 2035.” “And would you like that?” Kate asked. Kwasi exclaimed: “Of
course, I think these are challenges that I think we should be able to rise to.” Later on the show, Laura revealed she had accessorised her outfit on the programme with a striped scarf to
show her support of the climate change stroke.
