Ruud van Nistelrooy once quit PSV Eindhoven after telling players and staff he no longer felt “supported” by the club. History could very much repeat itself for the Leicester City manager,

who is still in the dark over whether he will be kept on by the club beyond this summer. Leicester ended a woeful season with a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, capping off their

return to the Championship. But current boss Van Nistelrooy says he is unable to plan for next season in the second tier and make signings because he hasn’t had a conversation with the board

over his future, nor the club’s plans. The 48-year-old said recently that whether he remains in charge “depends on how the conversations go”. When asked about his plans for next season, he

revealed: “I still have to wait at least to have a conversation on a future together or not. Before that you cannot start planning. "I need to speak to be able to get a feeling on

hopes. It’s all dependent on that.” Speculation has been rife this month that Van Nistelrooy will be sacked and replaced with former Southampton boss Russell Martin. The Manchester United

legend has two years left on his deal but it is understood the Foxes want to appoint a manager with experience of Championship promotion, which Martin achieved with Southampton. Van

Nistelrooy has endured a disastrous spell since replacing Steve Cooper at the King Power Stadium in late November which has seen them relegated to the Championship. The Foxes were one point

clear of the bottom three at the time of his appointment but a horrific run of form followed which saw them lose a staggering 16 games from 18 played between December and February. And the

same lack of clarity Van Nistelrooy now has over his role is what led him to quit his old job as PSV boss in May 2023. The Dutch giants announced then that Van Nistelrooy would be leaving

less than a season after taking charge of the senior side. It came as somewhat of a surprise, given that he'd won a Johan Cruyff Shield and a TOTO KNVB Beker, while also looking set to

finish in second place in the Eredivisie. PSV at the time alluded to his falling out with the board, having released a statement which read: "Van Nistelrooy told the first-team squad

and coaching staff that he would be stepping down with immediate effect, due to a lack of support within the club. "PSV regrets his decision and is grateful to him for winning the Johan

Cruijff Shield and the Dutch Cup, and hopes to finish the season in second place." He went on to join his former club United as Erik ten Hag’s assistant ahead of the 2024/25 season.

After a poor run of form to start the campaign, Ten Hag was sacked, leaving Van Nistelrooy to take over in an interim capacity. However, he was instructed to leave by the club’s incoming

permanent head coach, Ruben Amorim, on the basis that the Portuguese was bringing his own staff with him to Old Trafford. The former Netherlands striker was left feeling “disappointed” and

“hurt” to have to leave. Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy’s potential successor, Martin, was sacked by the Saints in December and just 16 games into the Premier League season, having overseen an

astonishing 13 defeats. Martin has also been touted for the vacant managerial position at Rangers.
