The new Tunisian premier, Hedi Baccouche, pledged to promote far-reaching political reforms, including a genuine multi-party state. “We are determined to make pluralism a reality,” Baccouche


said at his first official news conference in Tunis, the nation’s capital. But he dampened expectations of early general elections, saying that the primary task of the new government is to


build a national consensus. He also said there will be no change in the nation’s foreign policy. Baccouche, a longtime ally of new President Zine Abidine ben Ali, was named premier Saturday.
