The indictment issued by the US Justice Department on Friday 13 was used to grill the Russian President over the election meddling.

While probing Mr Putin to receive a straight answer over the allegations, Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace tried to hand him the document listing the 12 names.

But the former KGB agent refused to take it, and while chuckling he waved his hand toward a table, where the journalist was forced to place the paper.

During the interview, the reporter pointed out the meddling allegations are standing in the way of a good relationship between Russia and the US.

The Russian President branded them as “utterly ridiculous”.

He said: “People are talking about the purported interference of Russia with the election process in the United States.

“I mentioned this in 2016, and I want to say it now again - and I really wish for your American listeners to listen to what I say.

“First of all, Russia, as a state, has never interfered with the internal affairs of the United States, let alone its elections.”

At that point Mr Wallace tried to cut directly to the point and waved the indictment to him, saying it “talks about specific units of the GRU - Russian military intelligence”.

But Mr Putin continued speaking, saying: “I will get to it. Just have a little bit of patience. Then you will get a full answer to your question.

“Interference with the domestic affairs of the United States - do you really believe that someone acting from the Russian territory could have influenced the United States and influenced the

choice of millions of Americans?

But Mr Wallace pointed out his question wasn’t about “whether they influenced” but “whether they tried”.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced 12 indictments against Russian intelligence officers for conspiring to interfere with the 2016 US elections three days after the first ever

face-to-face meeting between Donald Trump and Mr Putin.

The US President was pressed about asking Mr Putin whether Russia did meddle in the 2016 election campaign.

But following the two-hour closed-door meeting, Mr Trump chose to contradict US intelligence agencies and sided with Mr Putin, saying there was no reason for Russia to meddle in the vote.

He said: "President Putin says it's not Russia. I don't see any reason why it would be.”
