Correspondent, SAMANTHA CROAL Deputy Digital News Editor and CLAUDIA TROTMAN Audience Reporter 13:58, 04 Jun 2025Updated 14:03, 04 Jun 2025 A tragic discovery has been made in the search for

a Scottish holidaymaker who disappeared during a stag do in Portugal. Greg Monks, 38, went missing in the early hours of last Wednesday while out with mates. The grim find at the bottom of

a ravine is said to be "a long way from the spot where he was last seen" in the sunny Algarve. Portuguese tabloid Correio da Manha reports that detectives from Portugal's

Policia Judiciaria are on the scene. Fire brigade teams have reportedly retrieved the body from the dense woodland. There's been no word yet from Greg's kin or the authorities. The

Glasgow lad had just kicked off a five-day lads' trip when he lost touch with his group last week. The party had checked into the Novochoro Apartments before hitting the Albufeira

Strip and belting out tunes at King's Cross karaoke bar, which is where Greg split from his pals, reports the Daily Record. CCTV last captured him in Cerro de Aguia, a residential area

about four miles from Albufeira's bustling nightlife hub, on Tuesday, May 27. Last night (June 4), Greg's sister Jillian confessed her "unimaginable" dread that Greg

might be "lying somewhere and we can't find him". The family circulated the last snap taken of him, clad in navy Nike shorts and a matching tee. Article continues below

Jillian revealed that Greg's friends sounded the alarm on Wednesday, May 28, after he didn't show up post their first night revelries. They told her "he's not come home

from the night before", prompting queries about whether they could ping his mobile for its location. Jillian revealed that when she first reported Greg as missing, the authorities

didn't seem to take it "seriously" because "it hadn't been that long". The family's search for Greg intensified when they landed in Albufeira, where the

local police flagged two CCTV sightings of him in Cerro de Aguia, a region known for its "rough terrain", including treacherous rocky hills and sheer cliffs. In a bid to boost

awareness, the family launched a Facebook group which has since rallied over 10,000 supporters. They've also plastered the area with posters in both English and Portuguese, detailing

Greg's last known location and how to get in touch. Volunteers have been out in force, conducting thorough searches on foot and by drone. The Policia Judiciaria issued a sombre

statement confirming the tragic end to the search: "The PJ has located the body of the missing Scottish tourist in Albufeira." They elaborated, stating: "PJ police, through

the Southern Directorate and with the collaboration of the Albufeira GNR police force, today located the body of a man who had been missing since May 28 in the Cerro de Aguia area of

Albufeira." The report concluded with the grim detail that the disappearance of the 38-year-old Brit was reported to the Albufeira GNR at 8pm on the 28 by a holiday companion. They

said: "After carrying out various enquiries and establishing the presumed route taken in the early hours of that day since the last sighting, the body was located on steep wasteland.

"After the appropriate judicial inspection, the body will be removed and taken to the nearest Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy." Article continues below A spokesperson

from the Foreign Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities". _FOR THE LATEST BREAKING
