Cloud CRM software vendor Salesforce has acquired Quip, a cloud-based word processing service that is offering a challenge to Microsoft’s Office 365 and Google Drive. Quip’s cloud-based
software is built for use on mobile devices. It lets a number of users create documents and work on them together. Salesforce was already an investor in Quip – which was devised by former
Facebook chief technology officer and Google engineer Bret Taylor, now Quip CEO – through its venture fund, Salesforce Ventures. Quip is free for individual users. Small companies pay $12
per user per month. Larger enterprises pay $25 per user. Customers are said to include Facebook, Electronic Arts, CNN and software analytics outfit New Relic. NYSE-listed Salesforce was
founded in 1999 by former Oracle exec Mark Benioff, while his former boss, Oracle chief Larry Ellison, is said to have been a major investor.
