THE FIRST DELETIONS WILL START LATER THIS YEAR NEIL SHAW Assistant Editor 13:05, 17 May 2023 Google is to start deleting thousands of Gmail accounts, leaving people without access to other
platforms - such as YouTube. Accounts will be removed from December in a bid to tighten security. Accounts will be deleted if users rely on compromised passwords, reports DailyMail,
alongside accounts that have not been used for two years. Google said: "People want the products and services they use online to be safe and secure. Which is why we have invested in
technology and tools to protect our users from security threats, like spam, phishing scams and account hijacking. "Even with these protections, if an account hasn't been used for
an extended period of time, it is more likely to be compromised. "This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or re-used passwords that may have been compromised,
haven't had two factor authentication set up, and receive fewer security checks by the user." Article continues below The first deletions will be accounts that were created and
then never used. Google says it will send notifications before deleting accounts. You can protect your account from deletion by signing in, and sending an email. Google said: "We are
going to roll this out slowly and carefully, with plenty of notice."
