Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide essential, life-changing care that helps Veterans overcome challenges with speech, language, cognitive communication, swallowing, and voice. As we
recognize Speech Pathologist Day on May 18, we honor the dedicated professionals who restore independence, confidence, and quality of life for those who served. For Sommer Rodrigue, a
seasoned SLP with 18 years of service at the Jackson VA, this work is deeply personal. “As the granddaughter of a World War II Purple Heart recipient, my commitment to serving Veterans is a
way to honor not only their sacrifices but also their resilience,” she said. “In my role, I strive to help Veterans regain control of their lives despite the medical challenges they face.”
SLP services are often recommended for Veterans recovering from strokes, traumatic brain injuries, or other neurological conditions that affect memory, attention, problem-solving, or
swallowing. Using early detection and comprehensive evaluations, Rodrigue and her colleagues create individualized treatment plans tailored to each Veteran’s diagnosis, lifestyle, and goals.
“Our team works closely with other VA healthcare providers to ensure every Veteran receives coordinated, holistic care,” Rodrigue explained. “Daily interdisciplinary meetings and shared
records help us stay aligned and responsive to each patient’s evolving needs.” Veterans interested in Speech-Language Pathology services can speak with their Primary Care Provider for a
referral. Treatment may be provided in person or through telehealth and covers a range of needs—from improving speech clarity and cognitive function to helping Veterans eat and swallow
safely. “Helping a Veteran restore their ability to communicate or swallow safely is, in my opinion, a true success story,” Rodrigue shared. This Speech Pathologist Day, we extend our
deepest gratitude to Sommer Rodrigue and all SLP professionals whose expertise, compassion, and commitment make a lasting difference in the lives of our nation’s heroes.
