West Coast premiership defender Darren Glass has thrown his hat in the coaching ring, signing with Hawthorn as an assistant for 2018. Glass and Collingwood assistant coach Scott Burns were
today announced as the new faces to join Alastair Clarkson’s staff next season. The Hawks’ coaching ranks have infamously become almost a production line for AFL head coaches, with Adam
Simpson (Eagles), Luke Beveridge (Western Bulldogs), Chris Fagan (Brisbane), Brendon Bolton (Carlton), Damien Hardwick (Richmond) and Leon Cameron (GWS) all having spent time on Clarkson’s
team. Glass’ new role will be his first full-time foray into football since retiring at the end of 2014. The 36-year-old has been working as a business strategy consultant, but did some
part-time leadership coaching at Adelaide in 2015. Burns joins the Hawks from Collingwood, where he has worked under Nathan Buckley as the midfield coach since 2014, having started his
coaching career at West Coast after retiring from playing in 2008. Hawthorn general manager of football operations Jason Burt was thrilled with the signings. “Both Scott and Darren captained
their respective clubs during their playing careers and have exceptional leadership skills,” he said. “Scott has a wealth of experience as an assistant coach across two respected clubs and
we look forward to the new ideas and perspective he brings to our coaching group. “Darren has followed a slightly different path since retiring from the game and has spent the last couple of
years working in the business world. “He’s got really strong values and communication skills and we think he will really thrive in the environment here at Hawthorn.” Glass played 270 games
for the Eagles and played a tremendous role in the club’s regeneration after being dogged by cultural issues following the 2006 premiership. GET THE LATEST NEWS FROM THEWEST.COM.AU IN YOUR
