have set the early pace in the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association’s premier women’s competition, keeping a second clean sheet in the absence of young keeper Tess Rowling to remain
unbeaten with a 3-0 win over Pegasus.
Last Friday’s result reinforced Mines’ status as an early contender in the A1 women’s competition after hammering last year’s grand finalists YMHC 8-0 in the opening round.
Amanda McFall kept the nets empty for Mines with teen goaltender Rowling away with the State under-15s, as Casey Reghenzani, Rachel Perazzo and high-performing recruit Rebecca Savill
recorded goals for the victors.
Savill’s introduction has been particularly valuable after a hattrick in her debut for her new club.
The side’s start to the season has Mines coach Luke Wakeman buzzing.
“It’s really promising to get a good start especially with some new players coming in,” he said.
“Bec Savill came through with a good hat-trick in our first game and backed it up with another goal last Friday.
“It’s really good to watch the women come out and move from a good off-season to a strong start to the season.”
Meanwhile, YM recorded their first A1 women’s win of the season with Michelle Hahn and Marnie Wilson hitting the scoreboard in a 2-1 win over Norths.
Erin Glasson hit a late consolation for Norths, who were unable to penetrate the YM defence in a frantic closing minute.
In A2 women’s competition Mines accounted for Pegasus 2-1, Norths were on song to down YMHC 6-3 and CBC tied 1-1 with Veterans.
