Vijay Mallya cannot be deported from the United Kingdom even though his passport has been revoked by India, the Ministry of External Affairs has been informed. The UK has, however, asked

India “to consider requesting mutual legal assistance or extradition” acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations against Mallya. The MEA issued a statement early Wednesday morning

saying, the UK government has informed us that under the 1971 Immigration Act, the UK does not require an individual to hold a valid passport in order to remain in the country if they have

extant leave to remain as long as their passport was valid when leave to remain or enter the UK was conferred. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley commented on the issue in the Rajya Sabha and

said Britain has maintained a similar stand in the past as well. Deportation won’t be allowed if someone has entered Britain with a valid passport, even if it’s cancelled later. And the

process for extradition would be continued.
