The News Minute| June 28, 2014| 02:10 pm ISTLos Angeles: The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has put up an exhibition documenting the history of the kimono- the traditional attire of

Japanese woman. The kimono is believed to date back to the ancient period but it came to be highly regarded as a status symbol in the 17th century. The history of the kimono became tied to a

history of struggle between the merchant classes and the ruling Samurai classes. As the merchant classes started to gain wealth, they adopted the kimono as a symbol of affluence. The

Samurai classes, challenged by the former’s rise, then formed rules as to who could wear what colours and patterns. According a Wall Street Journal report, the exhibition at LA mostly

displays kimonos from the 20th century and the late 19th century. These kimonos have simple, graphic patterns and were probably used as daily wear by women. But what is also noted is that

the prints display patterns that seem to have been incorporated from the modern world. One kimono from the 1950s uses Sputnik as its pattern! The kimono is now generally worn by Japanese

women only on occasion.
