PICO RIVERA, Calif. – Nov. 12, 2020 - In response to the current pandemic the City of Pico Rivera (City) has launched today a unique combined outdoor dining experience and micro parklet for
area residents. The parklet, a repurposed shipping container painted with bright colors to pay homage to the City’s history will be located in the parking lot of Brewjeria, a local
family-friendly pub/eating establishment for use by local residents seeking food and libation, or just an enjoyable alfresco outing. Mayor Pro Tem Ron Elias was joined by members of the city
council as they cut the red ribbon to launch the city’s parklet program. “Our parklets are intended to transform small segments of local streets into “micro-parks” and can be used as
outdoor dining spaces,” said Pico Rivera Mayor Gustavo Camacho. “They are designed to entice people to support our local businesses by offering new and exciting public facilities alfresco
and they come in many shapes, forms and designs. Parklets are also designed with safety as its top priority and will serve as a structural barrier between vehicles on the street and
residents enjoying the parklet.” During non-dining hours, the public will be invited to use the parklet as an outdoor mini-space to be enjoyed by the entire family. Members of the public can
bring their own food when using the facility. The City’s goal for the program is to support local businesses and promote economic activity, increase access to parks, open and recreation
space in the city and foster social life and contribute to local culture. The City also wanted to ensure the design of the parklet was functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Muralist
Alexis O’Neal was commissioned to paint the former shipping container with festive colors to reflect Pico Rivera’s agricultural history. The Department of Parks and Recreation will
coordinate programs to ensure a fun and lively park for all. The project will run from Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, until Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021. The parklet is located at 4937 Durfee Avenue,
Pico Rivera, CA 90660. Over the three-month pilot period, the City will evaluate the overall effects to the local community. Information gathered may also be used to develop a citywide
parklet program. If successful, the City is prepared to expand the program with additional parklets located at other restaurants and venues if the public overwhelmingly responds positively
and uses the parklet as an outdoor dining space and mini-park space.
