copper catalyst. A series of halogen-modified Cu catalysts, as well as Cu2O, are initially prepared — with the iodine-modified one being the most selective to ethanol — using a

two-compartment H-cell setup with a CO2-saturated 1 M KOH electrolyte with 5 mM LiI and paraformaldehyde equivalent to 3 M formaldehyde. After optimizing the iodine content, the authors find

that the highest performance is achieved at –1.12 V vs. Ag/AgCl, with a Faradaic efficiency for ethanol of 32.4% and a formation rate of 1.6 mmol g–1 h–1. The researchers also provide

extensive catalyst characterization, which reveals that the material, after being pretreated in CO2-saturated 1 M KOH electrolyte, becomes Cu2O with iodine incorporated into the lattice.

Operando X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies evidence partial reduction of Cu during operation, but still with a slightly positive oxidation state. The work is finally complemented

with mechanistic analyses based on in situ infrared and Raman spectroscopies and density functional theory calculations. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your
