Elevated β-synuclein levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could be an early indicator of Alzheimer disease (AD), according to new research. Using a novel ELISA, researchers detected

increased CSF β-synuclein levels in patients with mild cognitive impairment, AD dementia or Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, but not in other neurological conditions such as Parkinson disease and

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. β-Synuclein localizes to glutamatergic synapses in the brain, and its presence in the CSF could be an early sign of AD-associated synaptic degeneration.
