Access through your institution Buy or subscribe New research has added to our understanding of how metformin improves metabolic outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
The researchers showed that metformin treatment results in changes in the composition of the gut microbiota and levels of bile acids, which influence metabolism. Previous work showed that
microbial metabolites influence host metabolism through bile acid receptors such as the farnesoid X receptor (FXR). These findings led Jiang and co-workers to assess the gut microbiota, bile
acid metabolites and metabolism during metformin treatment in patients with T2DM. They used metagenomic and metabolomic analyses to assess stool samples from 22 patients newly diagnosed
with T2DM who had been treated with metformin for 3 days. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution ACCESS OPTIONS Access through your institution Access Nature
