Access through your institution Buy or subscribe In 2013, Fredrik Bäckhed and colleagues reported that the microbiota is altered in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but the
potential mechanisms and consequences of the changes have remained unclear. Now, the team have found that the concentrations of a metabolite derived from histidine, imidazole propionate, are
higher in the portal vein of patients with T2DM who are obese than BMI-matched individuals without T2DM. “Building on our 2013 paper, we hypothesized that the microbiota might form
metabolites that can affect insulin sensitivity,” explains Bäckhed. “To address this question, we performed metabolomics on the blood from the portal vein of individuals with T2DM who were
