Mountain rivers warming | Nature Climate Change

The air temperature in the mountains in central Europe is increasing. Warming affects high-latitude rivers and streams and changes their dynamics, structure and processes. While there is

evidence that water temperature changes, knowledge is still limited to seasonal or annual estimates.

Georg Niedrist, from the University of Innsbruck in Austria, analysed 40 years of fine-scale observational data to quantify overall warming and the month-specific changes of mean, minimum

and maximum temperatures of two inner-alpine rivers in the European Alps. These included: a larger river, Inn, with input of glacial meltwater, and the river Grossache, draining smaller

catchments without glaciers and larger rock areas.
