Innovative toothpaste inventor wins major prize

Professor Robert Hill, Chief Scientific Officer at BioMin Technologies Ltd, and the inventor of the innovative toothpaste, BioMin F, has been awarded the Chapman Medal by the Institute of


Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). The Chapman Medal is one of the Institute's premier awards, presented to Professor Hill for his distinguished research and innovation in the field


of biomedical materials, which have produced benefits for patients and contributed to associated opportunities in industry. Professor Hill, who is Senior Professor in the Dental School at


Queen Mary University of London as well as a Board Member and Chief Scientific Officer at BioMin Technologies Ltd, has carried out research on bone cements resulting in an adhesive for


sticking cochlear implants to bone. Prior to his invention, silicone adhesives were used, but these often failed to bond, resulting in replacement of the hearing implant and a second costly


operation. In 2015 he founded with Dr David Gillam the successful spin-out company BioMin Technologies Ltd. The company is based on three patents on degradable bioactive glasses used in


toothpastes for treating dentine hypersensitivity. The toothpaste BioMin F, based on these patents, is sold across the world including China, Australia, Thailand, India, North America and


Europe. It is proven to be effective both at remineralising lost and damaged tooth enamel, and improving the symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity. Professor Hill has published over 300


scientific papers and has 25 patents. His most recent patent filed is for Machinable Ceramics that can be machined without diamond tipped tooling and can be computer machined to produce a
