INTRODUCTION: Neonatal parenteral nutrition (PN) should be individualized for each patient's nutrition needs. Currently a pharmacy team(pharmacist and technician) must convert manually
patient PN requirements into PN component volumes, and independently verify these volumes. This conventional manual system is both time-consuming and subject to mathematical errors. We
hypothesized that computer software assisted ordering (CSAO) of PN could record individual patient PN requirements, define PN component volumes, eliminate mathematical errors and save
pharmacy time. METHODS: A pilot study of 33 PN orders was completed using both the conventional manual system and the new CSAO system. The following variables were compared: TIME spent
calculating PN volumes and independent verification, SALARY/BENEFITS of the pharmacist and technician, and computer (CSAO) installation/maintenance costs. CSAO also provides ordering
parameters for the physician to define the recommended safe therapeutic range for each component. Table RESULTS: Based on 5546 PN orders (11/94-11/95), CSAO demonstrates net savings of
$20,299. Full network connection of the pharmacy could save an additional $11,646. CONCLUSIONS: CSAO of PN can effect significant cost savings. Both the saving of physicians' time and
the elimination of manual calculation errors remain unquantifiable benefits. AUTHOR INFORMATION AUTHORS AND AFFILIATIONS * Dept. of Pediatrics, Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest
