Multi-agency research is already under way to investigate the dinoflagellates, which are thought to have killed some fish and caused large lesions on many others. According to an early


study, fishermen who work the infected waters have suffered memory loss and skin problems. The infected fish are menhaden, which is never eaten but is harvested in huge quantities for use in


pet-food and as a source of cheap oil for margarine.
