ABSTRACT THERE has been great interest in the possible use of interferon in the prophylaxis of rabies1,2, but interferon administered to mice failed to protect them from experimental
infection, with the CVS strain of rabies, possibly because the amount injected may have been insufficient to be effective in the cells of the central nervous system3. On the other hand, the
preinjection of rabbits with either neuro-vaccinia virus or virus-free extracts of tissues from infected animals was partially protective against challenge with rabies street virus,
presumably as a result of interferon production4. Access through your institution Buy or subscribe This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution ACCESS OPTIONS
