ABSTRACT WE have reported1 that a symbiotic relationship exists between _Rhodopseudomonas capsulatus_ (photosynthetic bacteria) and _Azotobacter vinelandii_. When they were mixed, the


combination fixed three times more molecular nitrogen than did either pure culture. If the _p_H of the medium were controlled, the nitrogen fixation in the mixed culture was stimulated
