ABSTRACT THE specific effect of molybdenum on the nitrogen fixation by _Azotobacter_ spp.1,2, _Clostridium pasteurianum_3,4, some blue-green algae (_Nostoc_ and _Anabaena_)5,6 and the
symbiotic nitrogen fixation by legumes7–9 is well established. So far, it is unknown whether molybdenum is also essential for the symbiotic nitrogen fixation of a non-legume such as alder
