AbstractTHE preparation of thin films of magnetic alloys with specific characteristics is generally acknowledged to be a difficult task, owing to the large number of parameters involved. One such
parameter, that of film thickness, might be expected to have a large effect on magnetic characteristics. The relation between this and coercivity has been studied theoretically by L. Néel1,
for film thicknesses in excess of domain wall thickness. For this condition, small variations in the thickness of the layer give rise to energy changes as domain walls are moved and lead to
the relation Hc ∝ t−4/3, where Hc is the coercivity and t the average thickness. Tiller and Clark2 have found Hc ∝ t−1 experimentally for t varying from about 250 A. to nearly 2,800 A.
