Wrapping an arm from the guard is an old practice, and allows the guard player a firm control over their opponents. It also has the advantage of slowing down the top player, so that first he

needs to deal with the trap instead of being aggressive on trying a pass. Plus it gives you a lot of possibilities of becoming the aggressor. Last week we filmed an entire program about

this type of guard for the Renzo Gracie Online Academy, and the process of doing so was very illustrative on how we work. Our chief-instructor Leo Tunico usually does it and has a lot of

moves from this position, but we wanted to come up with the “best 10” for the program. Therefore, before filming, we first brainstormed with Renzo and Gregor Gracie and listed at least 20

possibilities. Next, we came to our office (the mats), tested action and stress, and started cutting, cutting and cutting. The result was a whole system predicting several reactions. It will

be available soon for those who have the all-access pass to Renzo Gracie Online Academy.
