So my ancestors who died after Jesus' ascension but never heard the gospel had no chance then? After all, Jesus was supposedly only in hell for two days. On the third day, he rose, and
after 40 days, he went back to heaven, seated at right side of Father. By the way, there was no consensus in church history that Jesus' preaching to the dead would change the
dead's fate. It is still debated what those 'visits' to the dead would accomplish. It could be declaration of Jesus' triumph in general, as some Bible scholars say. But
the majority of church teaching stress that there is no more chance to be saved after you die. Plus, it's really not fair if people who did not know about Jesus get to be evangelized by
Jesus Himself after death. If that were true, Christians should try their best NOT to preach gospel now. Once people hear gospel from Christians, they no longer get chance to hear from
Jesus himself after they die. There are legitimate reasons why I don't believe now, but I surely will believe after I die if Jesus Himself appears to me. To deprive people who heard
gospel, but for whatever reason (church scandals, poor presentation, etc.), were not convinced, the opportunity to hear from Jesus again after they die, it's just weird. Forgive me, but
it's almost comical to think of it.
