MANCHESTER UNITED WERE BEATEN 1-0 BY TOTTENHAM IN THE EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT, AND RUBEN AMORIM'S SIDE HAVE NOW BEEN SLAMMED FOR GOING OUT WITH A WHIMPER 09:09, 22 May
2025 Alan Shearer has torn apart Manchester United's performance in the Europa League final by saying they wanted the win less than Tottenham. The pundit and former England legend went
on to lambast United's tactics, labelling their last-ditch attempts to score by using Harry Maguire as a striker "embarrassing". Two of the Premier League’s worst sides this
season produced a Europa League final lacking in any quality on Wednesday night. Spurs, decimated by injuries all season, took the lead in the 42nd minute as Luke Shaw and Andre Onana’s
errors allowed the ball to brush onto Brennan Johnson and trickle in at the near post. Tottenham sat deep for the remainder of the game to defend their lead, allowing Ruben Amorim's
team to control possession in the second half. But United offered no imagination in their attacking play and resorted to lumping balls into the box - to no avail - as Spurs held firm to win
1-0 and end their 17-year trophy drought. And Shearer did not mince his words after the game, when he slammed United's desperate tactics at the end and questioned their commitment to
winning the game. The former Newcastle striker said on The Rest Is Football podcast: "It was just [Spurs] bodies on the line trying to chuck themselves in front of whatever Man United
were throwing at them. And they did that. “Man United never did enough, they were rotten and they’ve been rotten all season. They’ve been awful, it’s been embarrassing for them. "Spurs
deserved it, I thought. I think they wanted it more and they were up for it more than United, that was apparent to me.” Voicing his disbelief at their reliance on Maguire to score, he added:
“Let me say one thing to you, Man United were an embarrassment tonight. “They chuck a 6ft 4in centre half up to centre forward in desperation in the last ten minutes of the game, lugging
huge balls into the box. “That’s how you’re going to get out of trouble? That’s how they got to the final, because of Maguire going into that position. “Man United are not the club that they
were 20 years ago, only by name. They’re a million miles off it both on and off the pitch. I don’t know how they’re going to get over this.” United's only big chances came from
crosses, with Leny Yoro failing to connect with a Bruno Fernandes free-kick while Rasmus Hojlund's header was cleared off the line. Fernandes himself also sent a header whizzing past
the post, while Guglielmo Vicario made a last-ditch save to keep out Luke Shaw's header in added time. As Spurs won their first European trophy since 1984 and secured their spot in next
season's Champions League, United suffered their fourth defeat to Ange Postecoglou's side this season. Article continues below The evening was widely seen as a new low for a club
that has become a shadow of itself since Sir Alex Ferguson left. For United, there will be no European football next season, having already recorded their worst Premier League finish to
date.
