Several residential streets in Leicester look set for new speed restrictions. The proposals, which aim to improve the city's air quality, could impact a number of roads in the

Braunstone Avenue area of Westcotes. The plans could see streets around Braunstone Avenue have their speeds reduced to 20 miles per hour after Leicester’s assistant mayor for environment and

transport signed off on the new limit. The impacted streets include the part of Braunstone Avenue between Upperton Rise and where it merges with Westcotes Drive, which would also gain the

restrictions along its entire stretch. Dulverton Road, Dunster Street, Taunton Road, Cooden Avenue, Minehead Street and Porlock Street are also set for the speed reductions. Traffic calming

measures like speed bumps would also be installed at the roads’ junctions with Hinckley Road to slow drivers, documents published online by Leicester City Council show. The plan has largely

gained support from those consulted, documents add. READ MORE:Free bus travel scheme launches across Leicestershire Of the 106 responses to the proposals received by Leicester City Council,

the vast majority – 93 – were in favour of the reduced speeds, versus 12 people who opposed it. One response was left blank. Additionally, 87 people supported the traffic calming measures.

The continued rollout of 20mph zones across the city forms part of the council's plan to improve air quality locally. It is also proposing improvements to walking and cycling routes and

to public transport under the updated approach. The new speed limit would connect to the 20mph zone which is already in place in the rest of Westcotes Drive, as well as the streets around

Sykefield Avenue and Barclay Street. Documents suggest the new speed limit could be in place from April 2025, subject to a traffic order being approved.
