17-year-old arrested in fatal car-to-car shooting on 110 freeway

A 17-year-old male has been arrested in the fatal car-to-car shooting last month of a man on the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles that detectives believe was gang-related, authorities said

Thursday. The teenager, who as a juvenile was not publicly identified, was taken into custody Wednesday by detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Criminal/Gang Homicide

Division, investigators said. Elroy Anderson Schenck, 41, was driving on the freeway approaching the Florence exit at 12:30 p.m. July 2 with a passenger in his Pontiac Grand-Prix when a car

carrying several people pulled up alongside. Persons inside the other vehicle began shooting into Schenck’s car, striking Schenck in the head. He managed to steer his vehicle off the

freeway, said Det. Sal LaBarbera of the LAPD. The vehicle came to a rest against a chain-link fence at the bottom of the exit ramp. Schenck died three days after the shooting in a hospital.

Investigators released a composite sketch of one of the suspects. “During the course of the investigation, detectives were able to identity a suspect in this case,” LaBarbera said.

Detectives are still seeking at least two unidentified suspects, LaBarbera said. “We believe the case to be gang-related,” he said. “We are still seeking the public’s assistance on the

case.” LaBarbera said Schenck was the intended target and the shooting was not random. Detectives did not say whether the unidentified teenager was the shooter. Detectives are asking anyone
