A murder defendant who represented himself in court was convicted Wednesday of the 1996 killing of a HomeBase store manager. Jurors next must determine whether he was sane at the time of the
killing. The jury found that Daniel Carl Frederickson shot Scott Wilson to death during a robbery attempt at the Santa Ana HomeBase store. The crime makes him eligible for the death
penalty. Among the evidence presented by the prosecution was a recording of Frederickson’s confession, in which he admitted to police that he killed Wilson, 30, because the manager would not
give him money from the store’s safe. Frederickson, 34, contended he was not guilty by reason of insanity. The jury will return for the sanity portion of the trial Monday. If he is found
sane, the jury will return for a penalty phase to decide whether he should be sentenced to death or to life in prison without possibility of parole. MORE TO READ
