After reading Janet Bernson’s article (April 9) about the decision of her school’s Shared Leadership Council to stop students from using lockers, I have a question for the council:
Aside from the problem of carrying books around all day, what do students do on cold and rainy days when they have to wear extra clothing and bring umbrellas? Do they carry them around from
class to class all day?
The rationale for this policy boggles the mind. For generations, students who had lockers were able to get to their classes on time, so why are these students any different? A student who
wants to distribute drugs can do it just as easily from a backpack as from a locker. Students have been allowing their friends to use their lockers for a long time. If students are stupid
enough to leave food in the lockers to rot, then it should be their responsibility to clean it up.
With all of the problems that the schools are having today, especially with finances, it seems outrageous that a school would waste its money and time on the use of lockers. Spending $50,000
on books so that the lockers can’t be used is another example of what is wrong with our school system.
