The Fillmore City Council took action Tuesday to assure that residents will not be left in the dark. The council voted to add security lighting in Shiells Park and to study ways to add
street lights in about a dozen areas where sheriff’s deputies say gang members congregate. More lights are necessary for the park on Old Telegraph Road and C Street because several lamps
were shot out last month “by something stronger than a pellet gun,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Lt. Dick Purnell said. The lighting will also fill in dark spots in the park after the city
shields floodlights on the baseball fields to reduce glare on nearby residences, city Recreation Coordinator Bob Buckles said. Operating 28 street lights in areas targeted by deputies would
cost about $224 per month, Purnell said. The areas, including streets in north and west Fillmore and near the new junior high, lack light standards, however, so the council delayed its
decision until the city staff can estimate the cost of installing the poles. MORE TO READ
