Scott Sharts scattered two hits and allowed only an unearned run as Simi Valley High defeated Walton of Marietta, Ga., 2-1, Saturday in the third-place game of the Colonial Classic in
Orlando, Fla.
Sharts (8-1), who tied a Colonial Classic record with his third victory, was named the tournament’s outstanding pitcher. Simi Valley shortstop Greg Gerber also was named to the
all-tournament team.
In the championship game, Winter Park of Florida defeated Colonial of Orlando, 5-4.
Walton (10-9-1) broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when it used three Simi Valley errors--two by third baseman Darren Lloyd and another by Gerber--to score its only run.
Simi Valley (16-2) took advantage of Walton’s generosity in the fifth to come from behind and score its runs, both unearned. With one out, Tim Laker was safe on an error then stole second.
He scored when Sharts reached safely on a two-base error. Sharts then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Gerber.
