I wish to thank Zucky Altman, her late husband, Hy, and all their supporters in the Jewish community for letting their “light rise in the darkness” by sharing their bread with the homeless
(“Free Kosher Food for the Hungry of All Faiths,” by Gary Libman, Oct. 3). These are certainly times of great darkness when the American spirit shudders in a protective $1.5-trillion cloak
of nuclear defense rather than open its arms in compassion to the increasing numbers of our children who huddle homeless in rags. Against such a niggardly chill, it is refreshing and
inspiring to see the warm and generous example of Zucky and Hy. Although I am a Christian, I know we have much to learn from the kindness and compassion of our Jewish neighbors. I hope we
will all act to let our light rise together, and that our nation’s leaders will follow the example that the Altmans and the Jewish community have provided. PAUL L. FREEZE JR. Los Angeles
