Fresh berries such as strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are among the most frequently discarded fruits in households. They typically go bad within two to three days of purchase due

to their delicate nature. Given their high cost, wasting berries can have significant consequences for both food waste and your wallet. This is why storing them correctly is vital. Experts

at Wheeldon Brothers noted: "Berries are highly perishable, especially when stored in damp conditions. The key is to manage airflow and moisture to stop the spread of the mould."

using a ventilated storage container was the best approach, reports the Express. According to the experts: "Allowing ventilation while keeping berries off the bottom of the container

helps prevent them from sitting in moisture. "It's one of the most effective ways to store fresh berries, and can keep them edible for 10 days." Additionally, the container

served as a space-saver in the fridge, making it suitable for various types of fresh produce. The experts also tested an airtight container with a sheet of kitchen roll, which showed

reasonable results but ultimately led to soggy strawberries. The professionals explained: "Airtight containers can trap moisture if not properly managed. "While kitchen roll helps

absorb some of that, it's not always enough to prevent spoilage, especially for fruits with softer skins." They found that when preserving raspberries and blueberries, keeping them

in their original packaging with kitchen roll isn't particularly effective for raspberries, but does quite well for blueberries. "Blueberries tend to last longer than other

berries due to their thicker skins. But overall, supermarket punnets are not designed for long-term storage once opened." To extend the life of your berries, they advise against washing

them immediately upon returning home. The reason being is that washing introduces moisture and this quickens spoilage; it's best to keep your berries dry and chill them in a cool spot.
