26 February 1999Lungworm warning
DAIRY producers who have not vaccinated heifers against lungworm should reconsider with their vet before turnout.
Graham David of Shrewsbury VLA, Shropshire, believes the drop in heifer vaccinations is one of the reasons lungworm outbreaks doubled between 1993 and 1998, with most now occurring in adult
cattle.
Doses must be given four weeks apart, with the final dose two weeks before turnout.
"Producers should return to vaccination. But they must plan parasite control with their vet to control gutworms and lungworm, using an appropriate mix of products. After vaccination you must
wait before giving the first wormer dose according to the product datasheet," says Mr David. *
