ENGLISH SUCKLED calf producers should check their records to establish cattle numbers born before August 1996, and cull these animals as part of changes to the Over-30-Month (OTM) scheme.
This advice comes from EBLEX which is calling on all sides of the beef industry to work hard to implement OTM rule changes at the earliest possible opportunity. To avoid OTM animals entering
the food chain, producers need to take extra care in identifying animals and maintaining traceability through BCMS, warns MLC economist Duncan Sinclair. “The publication of a 60-page BCMS
handbook is a major help. It replaces many leaflets and provides cattle keepers with a guide to ensuring correct identification and traceability,” says Mr Sinclair. Additionally, second
stage trials are under way at eight abattoirs to ensure a robust BSE testing regime which satisfies the Food Standards Agency can be implemented ahead of the rule change, he adds.
