The West African country will join a list of countries eligible to trade in rough diamonds under the Clean Diamond Trade Act.

The U.S. State Department is adding Gabon to its list of countries eligible to trade in rough diamonds under the Clean Diamond Trade Act of 2003, effective Friday.   The statute requires

the president to prohibit the import into, or export from, the U.S. of any rough diamond, from whatever source, that hasn’t been controlled through the Kimberley Process Certification

Scheme, a multilateral process established by the U.N. to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the mainstream rough diamond market.
