APM TERMINALS OPENS PIER 400 CONTAINER TERMINAL IN L.A.

APM Terminals, Maersk Sealand, and the Port of Los Angeles have announced the opening of the Pier 400 container terminal in the Port of Los Angeles.    The nearly 500-acre complex, signed

by APM Terminals to a renewable 25-year lease with the port, will have its first vessel call on Aug. 17, when the “Cornelius Maersk” arrives fully loaded from Asia.    Phase I of the

terminal, just completed includes 343 acres and 4,000 feet of berthing, with ten post-Panamax cranes, capable of handling three post-Panamax ships simultaneously.    The centerpiece of the

terminal is a 40-acre, on-dock rail facility with 12 loading tracks, each handling eight rail cars. The second phase of the project will be completed in 2004.
