Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov walk each other down at UFC 229 (Image: GETTY) The UFC's tenth pay-per-view card of the year was headlined by a lightweight title fight between
champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and his predecessor at the summit of the division, Conor McGregor. The eyes of the combat sports world and casual fight fans were firmly fixed on the T-Mobile
Arena for one of, if not, the biggest grudge match in UFC history, which was fuelled by some questionable pre-fight trash talk from McGregor. Over two million people tuned in to see McGregor
attempt to wrestle the lightweight crown from Nurmagomedov’s clutches, which he failed to do. But it wasn’t Nurmagomedov’s emphatic fourth-round submission victory that left a lasting
impression on viewers across the globe. RELATED ARTICLES Instead, it was what happened after the Dagestan native made ‘The Notorious’ begrudgingly tap to a neck crank that will forever be at
the forefront of fans’ minds when they recall UFC 229. Moments after solidifying himself as the best lightweight on the planet, Nurmagomedov sparked a mass brawl by leaping over the cage
and attempting to attack McGregor’s team-mate Dillon Danis. That act sparked scuffles inside the Octagon, one of which saw McGregor clash with Nurmagomedov’s cousin Abubakar on top of the
cage. And moments after McGregor was separated from Abubakar, he was attacked by Nurmagomedov associates Zubaira Tukhugov - a UFC featherweight - and Esed Emiragaev, the latter of who sucker
punched the Dubliner in the back of the head. Khabbib Nurmagomedov sparked a mass brawl after scaling the cage and trying to attack Dillon Danis (Image: GETTY) Conor McGregor looks

Mendez on Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov's actions in > the UFC 229 brawl The Nevada State Athletic Commission didn’t take kindly to the pair’s actions and have suspended the
McGregor and Nurmagomedov from competing indefinitely pending the outcome of their investigation. Danis and Tukhugov have also been reprimanded by the commission but have not yet been
punished. Nurmagomedov is expected to learn his fate for his part in the unsavoury brawl on Monday afternoon at a disciplinary hearing in Las Vegas. McGregor was also scheduled to attend the
enquiry but was granted a continuance, so his presence is no longer required. A new date for McGregor's hearing has not yet been announced, though he may not have one if he reaches a
settlement agreement with the commission. RELATED ARTICLES Conor McGregor clashes with Khabib Nurmagomedov's cousin Abubakar (Image: GETTY) The NSAC are no strangers to dishing out
hefty sanctions - just ask Nick Diaz and Wanderlei Silva - and will more than likely make an example out of Nurmagomedov as he instigated the melee. Should they bring the hammer down on the
Russian, The Eagle’s head coach Javier Mendez believes they should bestow the same punishment on McGregor. “If someone is going to get punished, the other should get punished the same,”
Mendez told Express Sport. “There shouldn’t be special treatment for either one of them. “If they’re both going to get punished, they both get punished. If one doesn’t get punished, neither
should the other.” Mendez is hoping the NSAC take into account McGregor’s trash talk before UFC 229, which comprised of the Irishman taunting Nurmagomedov’s father and repeatedly calling him
a ‘Dagestani rat’, before sanctioning the lightweight champion. Conor McGregor: An irate Khabib Nurmagomedov is held back by a commission chief (Image: GETTY) “I would think that the
commission should be lenient on him under the circumstances,” the American Kickboxing Academy head coach said of tomorrow’s hearing. “He’s only human, he’s only human. “Look, what happened
there should’ve never happened. But what should’ve never happened either is allowing all that hate talk to be talked about. “To get into someone’s head like that and have them bottle all
that up inside - it just exploded at the end. “It’s just the same thing as when Khabib jumped the cage, Conor jumped the cage too. “And Conor is trying to defend his buddy because he knows
Khabib is doing something. Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov should receive the same punishment, Javier Mendez (R) reckons (Image: JAVIER MENDEZ / INSTAGRAM) “So Conor is on defence
mode too protecting his friends, so Conor takes a swing at his cousin, which was wrong. They’re both wrong.” The outcome of tomorrow’s hearing will have a significant impact on the future of
the lightweight division. The UFC brass will be hoping the NSAC don’t give Nurmagomedov a lengthy suspension so he can defend his title against former interim 155lbs champion Tony Ferguson
or rematch McGregor sometime next year. But given the commission’s history of giving out questionable punishments, there’s every chance we may not see Nurmagomedov back in the cage for a
long time.
