The BBC show is an adaption of Wilkie Collins’ gothic novel of the same name. Set in the 1860s, a synopsis from the BBC teases: “Romance, suspense, and danger combine as secrets come to the

fore in Wilkie Collins’ haunting tale of insanity and identity. “The Woman in White will take viewers on a chilling ride down the shadowy paths and corridors of English country houses and

ultimately into the depths of the Victorian madhouse.” However, several viewers didn’t think the costumes were in keeping with the time in which it was set. Laura Fairlie (played by Olivia

Vinall) was seen wandering around in a white dress for most of the show. Subsequently, many thought her bed clothes-looking ensemble was not suitable dress for a woman in the 19th century

and they didn’t hold back in pointing it out. Those watching at home were confused by the attire and took to Twitter to comment. One stated: “That nightie Laura’s prancing about in is really

inappropriate for the times. Corset, underdress, overdress, top dress. #TheWomanInWhite.” “Is that a dress or is she wearing a nightie? #TheWomanInWhite,” another questioned. A third asked:

“She have no other dress? #TheWomanInWhite.” A viewer even wrote: “Why is #TheWomanInWhite wandering around in her nightie?” To which another replied: “The clothes in this are all wrong.”

There was also some debate as to whether Marian (Jessie Buckley) would be allowed to wear trousers given the era. “Marian’s trousers- anachronistic? #TheWomanInWhite,” a viewer queried. “How

was she even allowed to wear trousers #TheWomanInWhite,” a second asked. Despite the wardrobe saga, plenty of fans appeared to enjoy the first instalment of the five part drama. “That first

episode of #TheWomanInWhite was wonderful. Beautifully cast,” one claimed. Another exclaimed: “#TheWomanInWhite is one of my favourite novels so I approached the latest TV adaptation

cautiously... but (on the whole) I enjoyed the first episode a great deal.” A third added: “#TheWomanInWhite read the book last year, really enjoyed it. Looking like the series is shaping up

to be very good too.” _THE WOMAN IN WHITE CONTINUES SUNDAY AT 9PM ON BBC ONE._
