Marsha and Carl Mueller of Prescott, Arizona, told ABC News their daughter Kayla Mueller, who was enslaved by terrorist kingpin Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was “deserted” by Doctors Without
Borders in Syria. They said medical aid group refused to speak with them for months and withheld information provided by freed Doctors Without Borders hostages. "They're a fabulous
organisation, and they do wonderful work," said Mr Mueller. “But somewhere in a boardroom, they decided to leave our daughter there to be tortured and raped and ultimately
murdered." The 26-year-old was killed in ISIS captivity, 18 months after she was taken. She was kidnapped as she accompanied her boyfriend Omar Alkhani to Syria to help install
communications equipment for Doctors Without Borders. She was kidnapped as she accompanied her boyfriend Omar Alkhani to Syria to help install communications equipment for Doctors Without

The humanitarian group’s US executive director Jason Cone has maintained that it was not Doctors Without Borders’ responsibility. He told the news channel: “We could not take steps to
negotiate for her freedom. “Because we can’t be in the business of negotiating for people who don’t work for us.” He added: “She wasn’t our responsibility anymore – I don’t think there was a
moral responsibility.” In press statement at the time of Kayla’s death, the aid group clarified that at no time did Kayla work for the group in Syria or anywhere else. Ms Mueller was
tortured and imprisoned at the hands of the reclusive leader of ISIS following her capture. She was forced to convert to Islam and was married to the ISIS leader by force. Fresh light was
shed onto Ms Mueller’s time as a captive in Raqqa by a 16-year-old who was kept prisoner alongside her. Speaking of the moment she learned of the US aid worker's death, Muna, a Yazidi
taken prisoner by Islamic State, said: "I was so sad, but I don't believe she was killed in an airstrike.
