The US Senate voted to acquit Donald Trump of abuse of office and perverting the course of justice. Following his success in the impeachment trial, the American President made a victory
speech and hit out at many people - including European leaders. Mr Trump accused Germany, France and the UK of taking his country for "suckers". The President told the audience:
"I told Mike Pence, I said 'Mike, we're giving them money'. "And you know you're always torn about that because we have our country to build, our cities to
build and our roads to fix. "But we're giving them money. Tell me, why isn't Germany paying money? Why isn't France? Why isn't the United Kingdom? "Why
aren't they paying money? Why are we paying the money?" READ MORE: DONALD TRUMP SNUB: IVANKA TRUMP SAVAGED FOR ‘DEFYING’ FATHER IN SHOCK Mr Trump continued: "I say, find out
what the hell is going on, and I told that to all of my people. "I asked that question. How much is Germany paying? Why isn't Germany paying? "Why is the United States always
the sucker? We're a bunch of suckers. "That's turning around fast, but it makes it harder when stuff like this happens because you want to focus." The tally for
Trump's conviction fell far below the 67-vote threshold necessary for removal and neither article of impeachment garnered even a simple majority. The first article, abuse of power, was
rejected 48 to 52, and the second, obstruction of Congress, was defeated 47 to 53. Senator Mitt Romney, Republican of Utah, was the only member to break with his party, voting to remove Mr
Trump from office. The President's State of the Union address was also plagued with controversy. Notably, Mr Trump refused to shake the hand of Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy
Pelosi, to which she responded by tearing his speech in half at the end.
