Snow and ice will descended over parts of the UK, as conditions turned dangerous with temperatures plummeting. After a cold weekend that saw the mercury reach just a few degrees on Sunday,
January 7, the bitter spell appears set to stay, with temperatures dropping below zero in England, Scotland and Wales. There were maximum highs of 3C and temperatures as low as -9C in the
north of the UK, according to the Met Office, which has warned of "wintry showers" across the country. Weather maps suggest some of those showers could fall over southeast England
and Northern Ireland, where meteorologists have issued warnings for ice. Those ice warnings, following risks of overnight snow, state that snowfall will continue into the day, occasionally
turning "quite heavy". The forecast warns: "A mix of sleet and snow showers will move in from the east later on Sunday night along with temperatures near zero. "Given
these wintry showers, and also wet surfaces after recent wet weather, some icy patches are likely on untreated surfaces. Additionally a few of the snow showers could turn quite heavy; these
probably only affecting a narrow zone but a few places could see 1 to 3cm, mainly over the north Downs and on grassy surfaces." THIS BLOG IS NOW CLOSED. WE WILL BRING MORE WEATHER
UPDATES AS THEY HAPPEN.
