Nicholas Mason, 43, is accused of committing seven burglaries and two attempted break-ins within four days earlier this month, including the brutal attack at the Birmingham home of Veronica
Eustace. Mason is alleged to have caused grievous bodily harm to the retired care worker during a burglary at her home in Greenwood, Birmingham, on Tuesday last week. The condition of the
grandmother of 14 has been described as serious but stable, and she is currently being kept in hospital. In a statement released after the attack, Mrs Eustace’s family said relatives had
felt “physically sick” at what had happened to her. Her 32-year-old granddaughter Lindsey McDonough said: “My nan worked all her life. “She was a carer in a residential home and enjoyed
looking after people.” Birmingham magistrates court was told that Mason, of Wolverhampton, also faces a charge of fraud relating to a bank card. Magistrates remanded Mason in custody to
appear at Birmingham Crown Court on July 9.
