The Victoria line said it had “no service” while emergency services rushed to an incident on the track, causing travel chaos in the capital. Victoria line wrote on Twitter: “No service while
emergency services deal with a casualty on the track. “London Underground tickets will be accepted on Southeastern trains and local bus services via any reasonable route.” Just six minutes
after their original Twitter post, at 12.53pm on Wednesday, the Victoria line confirmed Oxford Circus station had been closed. They wrote: “If travelling via Oxford Circus, the station is
closed while emergency services deal with a casualty on the track. “Trains will not be stopping in both directions.” Images posted on social media showed Oxford Circus being evacuated
shortly after. One journalist wrote online: “Oxford Circus tube being evacuated 'owing to an emergency'. “All emergency services here. Traffic backed up.” He also shared an image
of emergency services on the scene with commuters and tourists spilling into the street. The Central line wrote on Twitter: “If travelling via Oxford Circus, the station is closed while
emergency services deal with a casualty on the track. Trains will not be stopping in both directions.” At 1.17pm the Victoria line updated Londoners, saying there were now “severe delays” on
the line. They wrote: “There are now severe delays while emergency services deal with a casualty on the track. “London Underground tickets will be accepted on Southeastern trains and local
bus services via any reasonable route.” And at 1.29pm the Victoria line said: “Oxford Circus station: Closed to the northbound Victoria line trains only due to an earlier customer incident.”
Other images posted on Twitter showed travel chaos in the busy tourist hotspot of Oxford Street. Fire engines, police cars and ambulances were all spotted at the scene responding to the
incident. Some images showed emergency services rushing towards Oxford Circus underground station. At 1.51pm the Victoria line update customers to confirm Oxford Circus station had been
reopened. They wrote on Twitter: “Oxford Circus station: Now fully open and trains stopping as normal.” At just before 3pm the line said that they were experiencing minor delays still
following the earlier incident.
