The Brexit Party fell short of securing their first seat in Westminster in the Peterborough by-election, coming in second, losing to the Labour Party by only 683 votes. Nigel Farage claimed
he always said the party would “run it close” and added the result proved “British politics had changed”. Speaking on the BBC's Today programme, Mr Farage explained the ‘reason’ why his
party could not win the by-election. He said: “Like it or not, something very significant happened here last night. “Now, the only reason the Brexit Party wasn’t able to push a couple of
hundred votes past Labour was because quite a lot of people still voted Conservative. “There are now seats like this over the country where Conservative voters are going to start to realise,
if you vote Conservative, you are going to finish up with a Corbyn government. “Once that gets through, we will begin to see tactical voting.” Speaking following the result, Labour’s
winning candidate Lisa Forbes said: “There have been many in recent months who claimed democracy in this country is broken but you have proven them wrong. “A democracy only works when people
make their voices heard on the issues that matter to them. “Many here are desperate to Peterborough change for the better. “Despite differing opinions and the fact that Brexit Party have
been rejected shows that the politics of division will not win.” READ MORE: Peterborough by-election FULL RESULT: Farage Westminster dreams DASHED after Labour defeat Mike Greene, the Brexit
Party candidate, hailed last night's vote as a "breakthrough”, despite the defeat. Speaking on whether he would run again, Mr Greene said: "I would run again because this is
my city and I love Peterborough." Defiant, Mr Greene added: “We’ve made a breakthrough. Give us the attention we deserve. “In an election, you will see us getting more seats all over
the country.” Following the announcement of Labour's win, Jeremy Corbyn praised Ms Forbes while also reaffirming the party's case for changing the country. Tweeting, Mr Corbyn
said: "I'm delighted to congratulate Lisa Forbes on winning the Peterborough by-election and for running a people-powered campaign. "Peterborough has again rejected Tory
austerity - showing clear support for our programme of ending cuts and investing in services and communities. "This result shows that despite the divisions and deadlock over Brexit,
when it comes to a vote on the issues that directly affect people’s lives, Labour’s case for real change has strong support across the country." Tory candidate, Paul Bristow came in
third with 7,243 votes and the Liberal Democrats finished in fourth place with 4,159 votes.
