Madeleine McCann vanished from her holiday apartment in Paia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents were out for dinner nearby. What followed the events of May 3, 2007, was arguably the most

heavily reported missing-person case in history. Her whereabouts remain unknown but a new Netflix series revisits the mysterious case. The eight-part series, titled “The Disappearance of

Madeleine McCann”, features original interviews given at the time Madeleine went missing as well as new accounts from those involved. It also includes appearances from authors Anthony

Summers and Robbyn Swan, whose book “Looking for Madeleine” became a bestseller at the time. First published in 2014, it gives a detailed account of the events leading up to the

disappearance, as well as what played out afterwards. The book sheds light on a key moment on the night of the disappearance from the view of the “Tapas Seven”, including Fiona Payne.  It

reads: “At Apartment 5A, the McCanns’ emotions were spiralling out of control. “Kate and Gerry were both, Rachel Oldfield recalled ‘pretty much most of the night hysterical and screaming, it

was awful.’ “Fiona Payne, who is a hospital anaesthetist, said of Kate: ‘I’ve never seen such horrible raw emotion in my life.  “‘She was just bereft, extremely frightened for Madeleine.’”

The book went on to detail Kate's despair at finding Madeleine's empty bed. Ms Payne’s interview continued: “‘It was the helplessness of not being able to do anything – she was

angry, really angry – punching and kicking walls. “‘She was covered in bruises the next day.’” Despite the coverage the new Netflix series has received, Kate and Gerry Mcann do not support

its release. A statement on behalf of the couple argues that the show could hinder police investigations.  It reads: "We did not see – and still do not see – how this programme will

help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it. "Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected

in the programme.  "We will not be making any further statements or giving interviews regarding this programme."
