The Duke and Duchess of Sussex left Britain before the Jubilee was over and with little fanfare, sparking rumours that they were feeling the tension between them and the rest of the Royal
family. Prince Harry was spotted looking pensive as they landed in California after the couple had attended their first outing at a major Royal event for two years. But the couple have now
come under fire for taking a £160,000 private jet back home rather than flying commercial. Chartered flight provider Paramount Business Jets estimate the return journey will have emitted
nearly 60 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The Paris climate agreement stated that to keep global warming “well below” 2 degrees, each person’s annual carbon budget should be no
more than 2.1 tonnes per year. This means the Sussexes exceeded this amount by nearly 30 times in a single flight. The move particularly stings due to the couple’s campaigning for climate
change action. Prince Harry has described climate change as one of the “most pressing issues we are facing”. He told Oprah Winfrey in May last year: “We need to do better about stopping or
allowing the things that are causing so much harm to so many of us at the source, rather than being distracted by the symptom.” Earlier this year, the couple launched a new eco-travel
project which would see holidaymakers “rated” on their green credentials. The duke flew by private jet last year on a flight from Aspen to California after a charity polo match, but has
previously said while he nearly always flies commercial, “unique circumstances” occasionally prevent this. Royal expert Tom Quinn accused the Sussexes of “enormous hypocrisy” after details
of the flight emerged. The author told The Times: “They pontificate about helping people and the planet and then they take private jets. READ MORE: KATE AND WILLIAM PRAISED BY SUPERNANNY
AFTER LOUIS' JUBILEE APPEARANCE [REVEAL] To offset a private jet flight from Farnborough to California it would cost them £669, according to climate organisation Cotap. Mr Quinn added
their plane, a Bombardier 6000, was a “Russian oligarch kind of jet” for people who “just don’t care”. He added it is “almost like sticking two fingers up at the environmental lobby”. The
Bombardier is an “ultra-long range” 13-passenger private jet which features its own “private stateroom”, including a flatbed, and can travel over 6,000 miles without stopping. Royal family
members typically use the specially-made RAF VIP Voyager jet to travel around the world in an official capacity, although members have been known to take both private and budget airlines.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were approached for comment.
